Tourists in Cambodia Fall Victim to Blackjack Scams
Tourists visiting Cambodia are encouraged to be careful of locals who invite them home. This is on account of a blackjack scam that is occurring in frequently in the capital. So far, several instances of this scam have been reported last week.
The main region for this occurring is in and around the area of Sisowath Quay, which is a popular tourist sot. Here, tourists who are on their own in the mall or near the museum are approached by the local scam artists who talk and befriend them, claiming a relative is soon to visit the tourist’s country. The tourist is then invited to the local’s home for dinner or lunch via tuk-tuk. The locals deliberately pick a confusing and winding route so that the tourist is not able to find the place again.
The tourist is then served a meal and later invited to join a friendly game of blackjack for the fun of it. After a few staged hands, the game which is rigged begins in earnest and the tourist ends up losing and in debt. They are then taken to a nearby Western Union branch and forced to pay up money or else face violence.
